AI vs. radiologists on technical recall

A comparative study in screening mammography, presented at RSNA 2024

Technical recall is when a screening mammogram has to be repeated because of an imaging problem — positioning, compression, motion — rather than anything clinical. It costs the patient a return visit and the clinic a slot, and it is assessed by radiologists today.

This study compared AI against expert radiologists on that assessment. The work was accepted for scientific presentation at RSNA 2024.

It came out of my time at Whiterabbit.ai on WRClear, a software-as-a-medical-device combining autonomous and assistive AI for screening mammography, where I developed and evaluated models across several clinical tasks and led the statistical study design used to demonstrate the device’s benefits to the FDA.
